Once there was a man who had a lot of money. He was known for raising animals. One day, a thought crossed his mind: he decided to invite all his friends to a big feast at his house. He invited all the animals from his yard: the rooster, the hen, the duck, the pigeon, the guinea hen, and the turkey. He asked them to come and put on a parade for his friends. As a reward, he promised to make the most beautiful one the leader of all the animals.
The animals gathered to discuss the invitation. They were all amazed. They were asking themselves what would happen. After much discussion, they all agreed not to attend the feast, except for the turkey, who was too eager to go and make a good impression. The rest of the animals decided to each write a letter to the man to apologize for not being able to attend. The rooster said he couldn’t leave the yard by itself. The duck said he had to keep an eye on the kids because his wife wouldn’t be there. The hen said she couldn’t leave her ten chicks at home alone. The pigeon said he had some news to deliver elsewhere. These were the excuses they gave.
As for the guinea hen, she wrote that she was too bald to attend such an event. As we mentioned before, only the turkey announced that she would be attending the feast.
When the day arrived, the peacock was looking beautiful and well-fed, having been well taken care of. When she arrived at the man’s house, they made her sit on a nice chair for a while, and then invited her to the kitchen. As soon as she stepped into the doorway, they grabbed her.
The next morning, all of the turkey’s friends gathered to ask where she had gone. The rooster spoke up and said, “My friends, the turkey paraded her fine self on the neighbor’s table. Yes, my friends, they killed her. They cooked her. We were right not to go.” The guinea hen added, “You, the little ones who saw how things went, must be careful to listen to others’ advice, and you must never act like you know everything.”
